William Petersen Says Goodbye To CSI Las Vegas

I find it rather difficult to swallow that William Petersen, the reason for so many years I've watched CSI Las Vegas is actually leaving the show. I've adored his character Gil Grissom since that show started.

When CSI started, it looked like a show for geeks - with the ultimate geek leading the way. But it wasn't a bad show, in fact it became more and more interesting as cases unfolded in a way that didn't need savvy police intuition and other bad boy type heroes that would just come over and save the day.

CSI involved real brain power that it titilated thinking audiences and just attracted a huge following it had to make spin-offs in Miami and New York. And even the latter two couldn't compete with the original. No they could not. There was nothing like a geeky genius leading a team of investigators. There was just no clone for Gil Grissom. He was geeky. He was real. He had personal issues - a lot of personality issues. But his scientific approach to everything just made him less of an archetype protagonist in a television show.

But I guess right now, there will have to be a clone or the series will die.

I hear they're going to start a new character, sort of a "mystery man" in hopes to rile up audiences into watching after Grissom goes. A doctor with an intriguing backstory who’ll eventually take charge of the investigative unit. The new character will be a scientist who has a genetic makeup that some believe predisposes him to be a serial killer. A major part of his story line will deal with his journey of self-discovery.

CBS has not yet hired an actor for the part. Season nine of "CSI" premieres Oct. 9 at 9 p.m.

Will he be worth another series?
